NEW YORK, Sept. 3, 2014 –  Coco Rocha, Kristin Cavallari, Molly, Sims, xoJane, Milk Studios, fashiontoast and about 200 other publishers, celebrities and personalities debuted their mobile apps today as part of the launch of DWNLD (www.DWNLD.me), a new mobile app publishing platform.

Built by an all-star team of engineers from Google, Apple, Foursquare, Amazon, Facebook, and Tumblr, DWNLD’s technology can take existing digital content and convert it into the company’s proprietary app programming software to create a beautiful, native app. The result is high-design, code-free apps.

The company was founded by CEO Alexandra Keating, former Thrillist VP and Chairman Fritz Lanman, former Microsoft executive, Livestar founder and seed investor in Square and Pinterest.

“As audiences shift from desktop to mobile, we want to make it as easy to create a mobile app as it is to create a website,” said Keating. “More than 1 billion websites exist today but there are only about 1 million apps in both the App Store and Google Play. Many publishers have spent a decade building their Web presence but are struggling to become mobile-first. At DWNLD, we have built a service that will help people transform their content from web to mobile app with one click.”

As consumers spend more time on their mobile devices, the need to adapt and establish a mobile presence has become apparent for publishers, brands and personalities. Many of these content creators do not have the budget or technical expertise to work with developers, whose fees can begin at $25,000. With DWNLD, the cost to publishers is merely $15 per month.

At launch, DWNLD has published more than 200 mobile apps including celebrities, YouTube & social media stars, major fashion bloggers, digital media companies and food & design personalities. For many publishers, their app is an extension of their web presence, but for others, their mobile app provides a way to display exclusive content or aggregate their social media channels onto their own platform.

“We are excited to give digital content creators a mobile app solution that is native, fast and beautiful – without any effort on their behalf,” Lanman said.

DWNLD apps are customizable, with a variety of themes and templates based on publishers’ brands, and fully monetizable through advertising and affiliate linking. Publishers can also manage their apps through the DWNLD content management system or in real time via the DWNLD “preview app.” Once a publisher approves his or her app, DWNLD submits it on behalf of the publisher to the Apple App Store for approval.

The company was founded in 2012 and has raised more than $2 million in seed funding from top tech and media investors, including William Morris Endeavor, The Chernin Group and Crunchfund.
